The Business Case for Attending ALLA 2012

June 25, 2012

Here are some ideas for making a business case to attend the ALLA conference in Brisbane, 12-14 September 2012.

The vibrant program is designed to educate and inspire

This year’s program features over 20 speakers, including leading lawyers, academics and librarians from all sectors of the profession.

The theme Respect the past. Embrace the future reflects the critical point we have reached as a profession. It provides the setting for papers that consider the value of our traditions but also look towards the future, highlighting new trends and innovations.

No matter what your level of experience or the role you play in your organisation the program offers sessions that will stimulate thought, provide fresh perspectives and inspire action to fuel your organisation’s progress.

Highlight any papers you believe will be of particular benefit to your organisation.

Meet your colleagues

There is nothing like meeting someone in person to foster real business relationships that can reap benefits for your information service into the future.

With over 150 legal information professionals expected to attend from throughout Australia and overseas, the ALLA annual conference provides an invaluable opportunity to really get to know your colleagues in a stimulating but relaxed environment. First timers will be made particularly welcome.

There will be plenty of time to share information and ideas between conference sessions and at social events. You’d be surprised how much you can learn by just asking ‘how are you dealing with …?‘ or ‘how is … working for you?

Highlight any strategic relationships you intend to foster during the conference, or challenges you’re facing which would benefit from peer discussions.

Meet the publishers and other vendors

The trade exhibition will bring key industry players together in one place for two full days. With well over a dozen exhibitors keen to showcase their products and promote new services and future enhancements, the trade show is an important part of the conference experience.

Lunch and morning and afternoon tea will be served in the exhibition area ensuring you have plenty of time to speak to the reps.

The popular publishers’ panel which will kick start the conference on the Wednesday evening will no doubt provide many hot topics you can pursue with the publishers at your leisure to the benefit of your organisation.

Highlight any tools, technologies or practices you are considering trialing, employing, developing or upgrading.

Contribute to your professional association

Part of what distinguishes a profession from an occupation is a commitment to furthering the knowledge and aims of the profession as a whole. Being an active member of your professional association is one way to demonstrate this commitment to the profession while raising the profile of your organisation.

For ALLA members this conference is particularly significant as it will host both the annual general meeting at which a vote will be taken to wind up ALLA Incorporated and the inaugural annual general meeting of ALLA Limited. Be part of this historic occasion.

Highlight the importance of your organisation’s involvement in a national professional forum as an employer of choice and as a learning organisation in a competitive marketplace.

Take new ideas and enthusiasm back to your workplace

Energised by the ALLA2012 experience, you will be able to take what you have learnt at the conference back to your workplace where you can innovate and inspire others, develop new or existing services and stay at the cutting edge of technologies and standards.

Highlight the reports, plans and training/information sessions you intend to complete upon return.

See you in September.
